The ATS is very excited to announce the launch of the ATS Fellows Symposium (FTS) at the 2012 International Conference in San Francisco. The 2012 FTS program will allow for travel scholarships to pulmonary, critical care and sleep fellows to attend a two-day course covering cutting-edge topics in the field of respiratory medicine.

The ATS has received full support from Genentech to bring 140 pulmonary, critical care and sleep fellows to the 2012 FTS and the ATS International Conference. Each fellow will be provided with a travel stipend in the amount of $1200, which is intended to help defray the cost to travel to San Francisco. The ATS and the FTS Planning Team gratefully acknowledge Genentech for this support!

We are no longer accepting FTS applications.

Overview

  • The ATS FTS will provide pulmonary, critical care and sleep fellows who are enrolled in an ACGME-accredited, U.S. training program with an orientation to the sessions most relevant to them at the ATS 2012 International Conference in San Francisco.
  • The FTS will include 20 faculty presentations on clinical issues related to the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of pulmonary, critical care and sleep disorders, including sepsis, COPD, lung cancer, asthma, pulmonary arterial hypertension, obesity and sleep. The FTS will also feature two breakout sessions and one ultrasonography dinner symposium.
  • FTS participants have the opportunity to interact with world renowned faculty speakers and leading experts in informal settings during meals and breaks
  • Each topic discussed during the symposium will correspond to specific sessions and poster presentations at ATS 2012.
  • As part of the registration process, the ATS will require participating fellows to take a pre-test to assess their knowledge, allowing faculty members to customize the program to specifically address weaknesses or gaps in learning.

The ATS gratefully acknowledges the FTS underwriting supporter Genetech for providing the Fellows Travel Scholarships. Additional support has been provided by Gilead Science, Inc. and Actelion Pharmaceuticals US, Inc. In-kind support has been provided by SonoSite, Inc.

Eligibility

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Every ACGME-accredited, U.S.-based training program is invited to designate one pulmonary, critical care or sleep fellow per program to attend the FTS.

How do I apply?

  • To be considered for the FTS program, all three parts must be completed at time of submission.

How are applications accepted / received?

  • Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis
  • The ATS will accept one fellow per training program; however, more than one fellow per program may apply and will be put on a waiting list. The ATS will award more than one fellow per program based on the amount of applications received.
  • Fellowship training program directors may chose to send additional fellows to attend the 2012 FTS for $75 per fellow. Please note that these fellows will not be awarded with the scholarship. Instead, they will be able to attend the two-day course. Send an email to fellows@thoracic.org for more information.

What happens if I am selected?
If a fellow is selected for the 2012 FTS, he / she will be awarded:

  • A travel scholarship to attend the 2012 International Conference. If travel to the conference presents a staffing issue or conflict, then unfortunately the fellow will not be eligible.
  • Meals for the duration of the FTS program.
  • Accepted FTS fellows are required to make their own hotel and travel arrangements.

Do I need to register / attend the ATS International Conference?
Yes, accepted fellows still need to register and attend the ATS international Conference. Attendance at the International Conference is mandatory and a fellow's inability to stay for the duration will jeopardize receiving the award. To register for the International Conference, please click here.

Below is a compilation of fellow quotes from post reports from the 2011 FTS.

"Participating in the FTS prior to the start of the main conference was a wonderful way to begin the week. I was able to hear high-impact lectures from world-renowned experts focusing on many topics important to the future of pulmonary medicine. In addition to the lectures, I was able to meet several experts and discuss their topics of interest and academic pulmonary/CCM careers. The FTS session was also valuable by introducing me to other pulmonary fellows that could be my future collaborators."

"The FTS set the stage for the rest of the conferences. The symposium touches on the main topics that are presented more in depth in later days. The information was presented at a fellow level, therefore, it was very enjoyable to be exposed to presentations full of straight forward and practical information that can be applied on our daily patient care."

"With countless sessions taking place simultaneously, posters in every direction, and a sea of heads to weave through, my memory of the last and my first ATS conference is one of being overwhelmed. It was my secret hope that by simply walking through the conference center, knowledge would somehow manage to diffuse its way through. This year, however, I had the fortune of starting the conference attending the Fellows Track Symposium. I feel the program not only managed to compress as much pulmonary, critical care and sleep possible in two days but better prepared me to navigate my way through the conference."

"The FTS afforded me a unique opportunity to learn up-to-date pulmonary and critical care approaches from experts in the field. The Fellows Welcome Center and lunch and dinner sessions were environments where I was able to discuss and get feedback from fellows practicing from all over the country. A common theme we discussed were the adjustments our various programs were making to the new intern work hours restrictions. It was helpful to hear how the various programs from around the country were going to deal with this dilemma. I have already recommended to my Fellowship Director that we send a fellow each year to the FTS!"

"The past two days have served as an exceedingly important review of the "state of the art" in Pulmonary/Critical Care and Sleep medicine. The selection of dynamic speakers to present information to fellows is an excellent method to address the future generation of researchers and clinicians in a way that informs, stimulates, and even entertains. The emphasis on making the conference accessible to fellows is encouraging, giving credence to the ethos that "the fellow of today is the colleague of tomorrow".

"I saved my notes from all the sessions I attended. I got review books for my boards, posters and CD that I brought back home to my other colleagues to review. I am more than certain I will be applying what I learned in my daily practice. It is key to attend and participate in such level conference during fellowship. Whether attending lectures, asking questions, observing how others present and ask questions is an unmatched experience. This conference also allowed me to connect with fellows and attendings from programs from all over the world. I want to thank the American Thoracic Society once again for making me a better fellow, researcher and most importantly physician."

"The FTS provided me with a perfect balance of clinical and research knowledge that will help to grow my clinical practice as well as my research, hopefully both of which will ultimately improve patient care. I am very thankful for the opportunity to attend these sessions and appreciate that FTS travel scholarship was able to defray the cost. Not only am I looking forward to applying all that I learned, but also to attending future ATS Conferences so that I can continue to grow as a clinician and researcher through taking advantage of the post-graduate courses and other helpful sessions."
